Three years ago, “MLOps engineer” was a niche title that most Australian hiring managers hadn’t encountered. Data scientists built models, software engineers deployed them (reluctantly), and the gap between a working notebook prototype and a production system was filled with duct tape and good intentions.

That gap has become a canyon. As Australian organisations move from AI experimentation to production deployment, the need for engineers who specialise in operationalising machine learning has exploded. And the supply isn’t keeping up.

CI/CD for ML: Building continuous integration and deployment pipelines specifically designed for ML workloads. These differ from standard software CI/CD because they need to handle data versioning, model versioning, experiment tracking, and automated evaluation.

The demand signal is strong and getting stronger.

Job postings mentioning “MLOps” on Seek have roughly tripled between 2024 and early 2026. LinkedIn shows similar growth. The roles are concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne, with growing demand in Brisbane and Canberra (driven by government AI adoption).

Salary ranges for MLOps engineers in Australia as of early 2026:

These are higher than equivalent DevOps or software engineering roles, reflecting the specialised skill set and constrained supply. Contractors and consultants can command $1,200-$2,000+ per day.

For comparison, a standard DevOps engineer with similar experience typically earns $120,000-$180,000. The MLOps premium reflects the additional ML-specific knowledge required.

Why the Shortage Exists

The MLOps skill set sits at the intersection of three domains that don’t traditionally overlap:

Software engineering: Building reliable, scalable, maintainable systems. Understanding distributed systems, APIs, databases, and production infrastructure.

Machine learning: Understanding model training, evaluation, feature engineering, and the specific challenges of ML systems (data dependencies, training-serving skew, concept drift).

DevOps engineers who move into MLOps have the infrastructure skills but need to learn ML-specific patterns and tooling.

The most effective MLOps engineers I’ve seen are typically software engineers who developed genuine ML knowledge, or data scientists with unusually strong engineering skills.

Key Tools and Skills

The MLOps toolkit has matured significantly. Current essential tools include:

Orchestration: Kubeflow, Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect for pipeline orchestration. Kubernetes for container orchestration.

Experiment tracking: MLflow, Weights & Biases, or Neptune for tracking experiments, model versions, and metrics.

Feature stores: Feast, Tecton, or cloud-native options (Vertex AI Feature Store, SageMaker Feature Store) for managing and serving features consistently between training and inference.

Model serving: TensorFlow Serving, TorchServe, Triton Inference Server, or managed services like SageMaker endpoints or Vertex AI prediction.

Monitoring: Evidently AI, Whylabs, or custom solutions for model monitoring and data drift detection.

Cloud platforms: AWS SageMaker, Google Vertex AI, or Azure ML. Cloud-agnostic tooling is increasingly preferred but most organisations start with one cloud provider’s ML platform.

Infrastructure-as-code: Terraform, Pulumi, or cloud-specific tools for reproducible infrastructure deployment.

What Australian Companies Get Wrong

Several patterns keep repeating in the Australian market:

Expecting data scientists to do MLOps. Data scientists are not operations engineers. Asking them to manage production infrastructure and deployment pipelines is like asking a architect to do their own plumbing. Some can, but it’s not their strength and it diverts them from the modelling work they were hired for.

Hiring one MLOps engineer and expecting them to build everything. A single MLOps engineer can establish foundations, but production ML infrastructure is a team effort. Expecting one person to handle training pipelines, model serving, monitoring, infrastructure, and on-call support simultaneously leads to burnout and brittle systems.

Not investing in MLOps until production problems force it. The time to invest in MLOps is before your first production model deployment, not after your model has been serving stale predictions for three months because nobody set up retraining.

How to Build MLOps Capability

For Australian organisations that can’t hire enough dedicated MLOps engineers (which is most of them right now), there are practical alternatives:

Upskill existing engineers. Software engineers with DevOps experience are the closest adjacent skill set. Invest in ML training for them. It’s faster than training data scientists in engineering.

Use managed services. Cloud ML platforms (Vertex AI, SageMaker) abstract away significant infrastructure complexity. They’re not a substitute for MLOps expertise, but they reduce the surface area that needs to be managed.

Engage external expertise. For organisations building their first production ML systems, working with an experienced AI consultancy to establish foundations and patterns can accelerate capability building and avoid expensive mistakes.

The Career Path

For engineers considering an MLOps career, the market dynamics are favourable. Demand is high, supply is low, and the role is becoming more defined and recognised.

The most effective preparation is combining strong software engineering fundamentals with practical ML experience. Take an ML course, but also build and deploy models in production (even personal projects). The operational experience — dealing with model monitoring, data pipelines, infrastructure failures — is what separates MLOps engineers from people who’ve just read about it.

The role will continue evolving. As AI adoption accelerates in Australia, MLOps will likely specialise further — some engineers focusing on training infrastructure, others on serving and monitoring, others on data platform engineering. The generalist MLOps role may fragment into specialisations, much as “DevOps” has evolved into platform engineering, SRE, and cloud engineering.

For now, the generalist MLOps engineer who can handle the full lifecycle remains the most in-demand profile in Australia’s AI job market.
